The Road To Eagle Scout
By Kim Shuskey
Bradley Trowbridge, the Boy Scout who is working hard to receive his Eagle Scout status had a very busy and exciting day. Bradley’s Eagle Scout project is the Veteran’s Memorial. On August 20, 2008 Bradley was able to attend the VFW (Veteran’s of Foreign War) National Convention in Orlando where he was allowed to explain this project.
This convention was covered by local and national news and there were over 6000 people in attendance. Bradley had the pleasure of speaking in front of all of them, including President Bush. It was Bush’s attendance along with the Presidential candidates, Senator Obama and Senator McCain appearances that drew national attention.
Bradley reports the VFW awarded him with a check for $7,495.00 for the Celebration Veteran Memorial fund. The project is said to be set to begin construction on September 1, 2008.
It is hoped some of the delegates will take Bradley’s inspiring story home to their clubs and more support may come. Bradley was able to give memorial pins to a number of dignitaries including President Bush.
On the same program was a member of the Celebration Club, Craig Whelden. He is currently appearing all over the county to present a program which encourages big business to support our wounded warriors.
This was no doubt a great learning experience for Bradley, a Celebration High School student. He was able to see and hear the President of the United States speak about things such as terrorism and the determination that our country has to stop it.
The VFW convention primarily drew thousands of older veterans, many of whom served in the Vietnam era or earlier. It appeared to include relatively few younger veterans who might have served in the post-Sept. 11 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
President Bush tried to give assurances that his administration is taking care of younger veterans. He received one of his loudest ovations when he mentioned signing a bill this year that the VFW has waited a long time for. This bill is going to expand educational benefits for troops.
